The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) is seeking a successful communicator to serve as the statewide Response Training Coordinator.
Under the general direction of Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) (OSPR's Outreach and Training Unit Supervisor), this technical specialist coordinates, develops, and implements OSPR”s statewide response qualifications and certification program for scientific and specialized emergency response staff. The incumbent will plan, host, and present training for internal staff, agency partners, industry, and other interested parties to improve oil spill preparedness statewide. During spills, the incumbent may also serve as a Liaison Officer, engaging with agencies, elected officials, NGOs, and other interested parties.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Employees are currently required to work in-person at least two (2) days per week. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

OSPR is a 24-hour oil and pollution response organization. The incumbent in this position can be required to participate in prevention and response training, drills, and incidents throughout California. A spill may require incumbent to deploy/travel via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.) with short notice. Travel, up to 10%, may include multiple days of overnight stay, up to seven (7) days dependent upon departmental need. Public contact work may require irregular hours, the wearing of a state uniform, and operation of state vehicles.
